There’s no doubt that traveling can be stressful. Between navigating through an unfamiliar airport, to travel delays and connecting flights, getting from point A to point B can be frustration. As such, it’s important to be aware of the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) guidelines and restrictions in regards to carry on bags and their content. After all, the last thing you need is to miss your flight because of being held up at a security checkpoint.

After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the continued threat of terrorist attacks, the TSA and other government agencies have increased their security, taking several precautions to ensure travelers are safe, and to minimize the threat of another in-flight terrorist attack. As such, it’s important for travelers and passengers to be aware of airline travel size containers rules and regulations.

Most passengers enjoy the convenience of traveling with carry on luggage, as opposed to checking a bag. This cuts down on check in time, and significant decreases the chances of luggage being misplaced, forgotten, or lost in transit.

When choosing to travel with a carry on bag, the TSA dictates that passengers must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Travelers are authorized to bring a single small bag of liquids, gels, creams, and pastes through a security check point. Airline travel size containers must be 3.4 ounces, the equivalent of 100 ml or less, and must be contained in a single, clear plastic, one quart-sized, zip-top bag. This specific airline container size allows TSA agents to quickly move passengers through security check points. Medications, breast milk, and baby formula can be carried in larger quantities than 3.4 ounces, however, these must be also be placed in clear, airline travel containers.

Airline travel size containers can be found at nearly all grocery and department stores, in addition to one quart-sized bags. It’s important to remember to pack light. Regular travelers pack the basics they’re need, choosing to purchase additional toiletries and cosmetics at their final destination or at the airport’s duty-free stores.

Being prepared not only expedites the traveling process, but allows you to have peace of mind, which in turn reduces stress. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact the airline or the TSA directly.
